As we go on, we see the UNESCO-protected San Agustin Church showcasing rich embellishments. We round off our old Manila tour with a visit to Rizal Park or Luneta Park, a symbolic place in the country’s history. The Spaniard’s 300-year rule in the country led to a revolutionary outbreak which was led by Jose Rizal, a physician, poet, and painter. Rizal was prosecuted and sentenced to death by
firing squad. He soon became a martyr and national hero. The revolution continued and later the country was declared independent from the Spanish rule. During the period 1899- 1913, the country was at war with the U.S. and the latter took control of the Philippines. The dispute between the Philippines and the U.S. lasted when the Japanese forces occupied the Philippine islands. Only until 1946 that the Philippines was declared independent. From the middle Ages, we now proceed to the modern side of Manila via a rolling tour of Roxas Boulevard, Cultural Center of Philippines complex, Mall of Asia – the largest mall in Asia, and on to Ayala Avenue in Makati City, a modern commercial and financial center.
